Chongqing (the municipal abbreviation is Yu), is situated at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers in southwestern China. With an area of 82,400 square kilometers, Chongqing has a total population of 33.75 million, with Han as the majority people. And there are other ethnic groups residing Chongqing, including Tujia, Miao, Hui, Man, Yi and Tibetan. The landform of Chongqing is mainly hilly and mountainous. Chongqing’s climate is mild, is subtropical monsoon humid climate with the average climate of 16-18 and annual rainfall of 1000-1450 mm. Chongqing is rich in its water systems, with Yangtze, Jialing River and Wujiang River running through it.
Chongqing is the only municipality directly under the central government in Midwestern China. It is an important city center in China, an economic center of upper reaches of Yangtze and important base for modern manufacturing industry. It is also a comprehensive sea, road and air transportation hub in West China, a key strategic support of western opening and development, a key strategic node of the “Belt and Road” and a inland opening-up heights.
With picturesque scenery, Chongqing is a well-known cultural city with a history of more than 3000 years. It was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Ba and the wartime capital of China during World War Ⅱ. The city proper, built on hillsides and surrounded by rivers, is called “the mountain city” with its buildings of a unique style on different heights among verdant trees, imposing and magnificent. Chongqing boasts quite a number of historic sites and tourist attractions, such as the site of General Joseph Stilwell’s residence, the site of the provisional government of the Republic of Korea, the Fishermen’s Castle in Hechuan, an ancient battlefield, the Capital of the Ghost world in Fengdu, etc.
Chongqing owns abundant tourism resources. It has not only the magnificent natural landscapes of mountains, rivers, forests, springs, waterfalls gorges and caves, but also the human landscapes of Bayu culture, ethnic culture, Three Gorges culture, capital culture and urban culture. There are about 300 sites of natural and human landscape in total, including 1 world cultural heritage (Dazu Rock Carvings), 1 world natural heritage (Karst Tourist Area in Wulong), 13 national key cultural relic protection units, 6 national key scenic spots, 24 national forest parks, 6 national geological parks, 4 national natural reserves and 20 national key cultural relic protection units. Many scenic spots are world-wide famous, including Dazu Rock Carvings, the Three Gorges, Small Little Gorges and the Natural Pit and Land Crack in Fengjie. Chongqing is granted the titles of National environmental Protection Model City, State Level Tourism City and National Garden City.
Chongqing, being municipality since 1997, has consistently expanded the level of opening to the outside world and actively conducted foreign exchanges and cooperation. Chongqing has built ties of sister cities with over 20 cities of Voronezh in Russia, Seattle in America, Toulouse in France, Bangkok in Thailand and Hiroshima in Japan. At present, there are 11 consular agencies in Chongqing.
In the past 5 years, Chongqing has accepted 23,000 international students from 134 countries. The rate of the students who want to get diplomas reaches 44.42%. Chongqing Municipal Government has offered Mayor’s Scholarship to international students and implemented the Plan for Studying in Chongqing. A systematic teaching and management working system has been established. A favorable developing trend has been basically formed that the government leads, universities actively engages in and all sectors of the society support the work of international students studying in China.
